Director of Hospice

Job Summary

The Hospice Director manages the overall achievement of clinical, operational, quality, and financial outcomes of the hospice program. This position, assists with increasing market share per budgeted objectives, and with the strategic growth/planning, organization and direction of hospice services in accordance with current governmental and accreditation standards and regulations. The Hospice Director serves as an expert in hospice, palliative, and end of life care as well as overseeing all facets of personnel management, patient care, utilization services, hospice functions, and the representation of the program to the Memorial Hermann system and to the local community at large.

Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Bachelors of Science degree in nursing is required;  MA/MS degree in healthcare related field strongly preferred

Licenses/Certifications:  Current Texas RN license required; CPR certification is required

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • A minimum of 10 years of professional nursing experience required
  • Five (5) years hospice/palliative care experience in the last ten years required
  • Five (5) years of progressive leadership experience required
  • Background in quality improvement strongly desired

Principal Accountabilities

  • Develops, implements and evaluates an ongoing service program which ensures quality homecare programs consistent with the organizational mission.
  • Ensures that consistent processes and program objectives extend across the service area.
  • Ensures operational excellence and quality service delivery in accordance with applicable policies, procedures and professional standards to achieve optimal patient outcomes and patient experience. 
  • Ensures a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
  • Serves as a resource to Clinical Managers, department leaders and office staff within and across service lines. 
  • Provides guidance (or appoints a designated individual) on the premises or is immediately accessible via telecommunications during operating hours when patients are receiving services;
  • Determines the mix and level of talent required by the organization to support current and future objectives; assesses the key strengths and skill gaps of the current pipeline. 
  • Attracts and recruits internal and external talent to meet those needs. 
  • Assists with hiring, orienting and evaluating qualified personnel for all disciplines. 
  • Coaches immediate subordinates providing frequent feedback; facilitates the development of problem solving and decision making skills. 
  • Follows progressive disciplinary action process to ensure performance standards when necessary.
  • Assists in completion of an operational budget. 
  • Facilitates meeting or exceeding operational targets through frequent analysis of metrics and review of utilization of resources, to determine need for realignment of goals and action planning.
  • Oversees the Hospice Continuous Quality Improvement Program, continuously evaluating critical aspects of care and patient safety. 
  • Sets specific and measurable goals and objectives for improvement. 
  • Listens to and involves the clinical leaders and staff in decisions and actions.
  • Models commitment to excellence.
  • Ensures that the customer perspective is a driving force behind leadership decisions and activities; identifying breakdowns in customer service and identifying solutions to create customer focused systems, processes and procedures. 
  • Responds to customer complaints with urgency and ensures when corrective action is needed, a plan is implemented within the specified time frame and evaluated for effectiveness. 
  • Identifies any potential problems with existing systems by direct observation and analysis of data.
  • Seeks new program strategies/enhancements, which would expand patient services. 
  • Exchanges information with potential partner areas to clarify partnership benefits, identify opportunities and take action to build strategic relationships.
  • Effectively communicates departmental, organizational and industrial information to staff. 
  • Communication captures and holds audience’s attention and stimulates others to action.
  • Encourages staff to seek opportunities for different and innovative approaches to address problems and opportunities and facilitates the implementation and acceptance of change in the workplace.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
