Assistant Research Professor, College of Engineering

University of Texas Permian Basin

This is a Contract position in Odessa, TX posted April 21, 2020.

The University of Texas Permian Basin welcomes applications for a Research Assistant Professor in the College of Engineering.

The research faculty member will contribute significantly to the research enterprise of the College of Engineering by:
• participating in a range of research projects/programs;
• leading the development of new programs and securing external funding for ongoing research;
• and, supervising/mentoring students engaged in these programs.

Instructional duties will include developing and teaching data science courses at the undergraduate/graduate level, in accordance with the schedule of classes and following the approved course descriptions and curricular guidelines established by the Faculty and approved by the Dean and the Provost; institutional service in the form of committee assignments and participation in activities designed to advance the mission and quality of the Department and College; and research duties that include active participation in a range of dynamic research programs and assisting other faculty members with their research needs, to include sharing technical expertise in the scholar’s area(s) of research and developing shared database and project management tools.

The research faculty member supervises/mentors undergraduate research assistants.

Non-teaching assignments will include instructional development; academic advising; participation in departmental and University-wide activities; serving on committees and task forces; and other appropriate responsibilities as described in the Faculty Handbook of Operating Procedures and Texas Regents Rules.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Research
• Support the development and management of the UT Permian Basin Water Institute
• Data gathering and database development; gathering relevant data and building a database for the Institute
• Development of analytical models that will incorporate gathered data into integrated descriptive and predictive tools
• Quantifying and predicting the volumes and composition of produced fluids in the Permian Basin region using data science; machine learning, data mining, and data analytic methods.

These methods will handle dataset variations and scale from low-integrity databases, and apply data analytics for statistical analysis, estimating future drilling activity, fluids production, and the optimization of water recycling facility locations and size
• Build a predictive and data visualization platform using multi-variable regression models, non-linear additive models, deep learning models, spatiotemporal analysis; and development of data management plan and support including analysis and interpretation of outputs
• Publish research findings
• Development (brainstorming to proposal) of new research areas
• Seek externally funded research and serving as principal investigator
• Supervise undergraduate and graduate research assistants Teaching
• Develop and teach a multidisciplinary course(s) in data science (machine learning)
• Teach and coordinate the research/internship course, ENGR 4192 Required Qualifications :
• A Ph.D.

degree in the field of Computer Science and/or Engineering
• Demonstrated teaching ability, scholarly promise, interest in the professional and personal growth of students, and a genuine spirit of study necessary to maintain currency in one’s academic field
