ABOUT THE JOB:

Summary:
The Team Leader, Nursing is responsible for providing leadership to the front line staff in collaboration with the Clinical Manager or Practice Administrator. Serves as a conduit between the front-line nursing employees and managers for the purpose of facilitating communication, overseeing orientation of new team members in collaboration with the Clinical Educators, and evaluating clinical practice with a particular focus on quality and performance improvement. Responsible for the results and development of assigned team members. Plans and executes day-to-day operational needs by setting priorities, planning for and addressing staffing needs, and coordinating work across other teams as needed. Provides guidance, coaching, and feedback to team members and provides significant input to employment decisions, addresses performance issues and administers performance reviews. Monitors key metrics and analyzes information to solve on-going problems to improve team performance. Serves in various clinical nursing roles (i.e., direct care nurse, charge nurse, etc.). The Team Leader, Nursing will spend 60% of their time in clinical shifts and 40% of their time in administrative/leadership, recognizing that at least 10% of their time in the clinical shifts is still spent coaching, mentoring, and developing staff.

 

Responsibilities:
* Perform all aspects of the Clinical Nurse job description when providing direct patient care during scheduled bed side care shifts
* People Leadership:
* – Participates in the interview and selection process of new team members
* – Administers periodic evaluations for new staff members
* – Administers annual PEAC’s/merit increases
* – Provides performance feedback to staff, including the documentation and counseling of performance issues
* – Maintains positive staff relations through Evidence Based Leadership and Just Culture
* – Completes scouting reports and weekly rounding on staff
* – Ensures that staff are kept abreast of changes within the unit, department, division, and organization
* – Provides mentoring to staff and developmental opportunities to help team members achieve their career goals
* – Administers disciplinary action to staff members when necessary, up to and including terminations, with support of manager and/or director and human resources
* – Provides appropriate recognition to staff members
* – Develops and implements Action Plans as a result of the feedback received from the annual Employee Opinion Survey
* – Accountable to ensure that staff are meeting patient care needs, standards of safety, effectiveness, patient rights and guest relations
* – Ensures that staff are delivering care with a team-orientation, an emphasis on good customer relations, sound clinical judgement and appropriate decision making abilities that take into consideration evidence based practice.
* – Ensures that staff are responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating and coordinating patient care. Uses clinical judgment based on nursing skills acquired through formal and informal experiential knowledge and evidence based guidelines to globally assess the patient’s situation and through critical thinking and clinical decision making, develop an appropriate plan of care for the patient, with the aim of promoting comfort and healing and prevent any unnecessary suffering.
* Operational Leadership:
* – Responsible for new hire scheduling with their assigned preceptors during orientation period
* – Processes Lawson personnel actions for staff
* – Balances staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and skill mix on every shift
* – Monitors trends with attendance and addresses any dependability issues with team members
* – Approves PTO requests for team members
* – Monitors FMLA/STD/LOA for team members
* – Reviews Omnicell reports
* – Develops and maintains positive physician relations
* – Responsible for ensuring direct reports timecards are accurate and complete prior to bi-weekly payroll signoff and holds staff accountable for repetitive discrepancies in their timecards
* Regulatory & Quality Compliance:
* – Ensures clean sweeps/unit-based audits are conducted
* – Ensures readiness for disease specific certification audits (where applicable)
* – Ensures regulatory readiness
* – Conducts unit environmental rounds
* – Monitors the expiration of staff licenses & certifications
* – Ensures employee related paperwork is sent to HR for filing in a timely manner
* – Ensures that Patient Health Information (PHI) is protected and secured at all times
* – Adhere to all infection prevention initiatives (i.e., hand hygiene, proper disposal of waste)
* Staffing:
* – Assumes the Charge Nurse role (frequency varies by department)
* – Takes on patient load shift (frequency varies by department)

EDUCATION
* Four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience Req
* All bedside nurses whose jobs include 50% or more direct patient care must have a minimum of a BSN by July 1, 2021. Effective 12/1/2019, new employees in this position must have a BSN at time of hire. Req

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
* Current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas Req
* BLS certification approved by the American Heart Association Req
* PALS/NRP/ACLS – department specific requirements (see addendum) Req
* Effective April 20, 2020, new employees must obtain PACES certification within 6 months of hire and existing employees must obtain PACES certification upon expiration of their PEARS certification (no later than April 20, 2022). (Department specific requirement – see addendum) Req
