Senior Construction Materials Laboratory and Field Testing Technician

B2Z Engineering is currently seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician for our A2LA Certified Geotechnical & Construction Materials Testing Lab in Houston, TX. Employee will supervise and monitor construction asphalt and concrete materials and advanced geotechnical testing laboratory to support government and private sector work, including various DOTs, in accordance with the clients’ requirements and within company policies, procedures and standards. This is advanced level technical work supporting engineers in functional areas of geotechnical design services, materials consulting, structure and roadway construction inspection, materials sampling, inspection and testing. Work usually involves a fairly-wide range of experience in decision making and use of judgment and will include providing work direction to others. The Senior Lab Technician supervises technicians performing advanced geotechnical laboratory testing as well as technicians and inspectors performing routine soil classification testing and concrete, asphalt and masonry-related materials testing. Tasks include working with design build firms to track work progress. Employee will supervise the daily operations of the lab including staff training, development, and performance review, utilization of equipment and facilities, safety oversight, quality of services and work product, timely delivery of services and deliverables, and adherence to policies and procedure.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities1. Excellent communication skills are needed for this position. Communicate tactfully and effectively – verbally and in writing.2. Must be able to track and organize large amounts of data to provide quick responses to questions.3. Must have current laboratory certifications/accreditations.4. Direct the maintenance and calibration of laboratory facilities and equipment.5. Complete administrative reports, purchase department supplies and perform other duties as assigned.6. Review test results for accuracy and summarize in report form for engineer’s analysis.7. Assist engineers as requested and perform other duties as assigned.8. Thorough knowledge of plans, specifications and standards, acceptable construction practices, construction materials, methods and equipment used in construction and engineering.9. Thorough knowledge of mathematical functions, including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations related to engineering.10. Ability to read and comprehend construction plans and all other documents.11. Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrate safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all laboratory services and tasks.12. Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement of laboratory. Monitor quality standards and practices. Engage senior managers, as needed.Preferred1.
